The Doha Historical Dictionary of Arabic (DHDA) is a project aimed at publishing more than 100,000 entries of Arabic words used in inscriptions and texts dating from the year 200 AH (Muslim calendar). The DHDA is one of a class of linguistic dictionaries which record the history of each word in the Arabic lexicon, as well as its structural and semantic changes and the authors of these transformations. The changes are also documented with texts that testify to the authenticity of the information.
The DHDA’s lexical sources are the basis on which its corpus is based. It takes into account several criteria to identify, collect, document, date and arrange all the sources and documents from the period of the first stage of the DHDA project, in which the oldest Arabic text is dated to the year 200 AH.
The lexicon derives its material from Arabic-language sources included in the first stage and contains a sufficient number of texts that reflect the growth and development of Arabic words and their meanings in various environments and cultural, scientific and cultural centers.
The DHDA website allows you to register, create an account and search for free the contents of its historical lexicon, lexical sources and the corpus linguistics. There is also a user guide (in Arabic) that shows how to register, browse and search the site.
