Public libraries as a partner in achieving the sustainable development goals: Digital Literacy Club for Seniors as a Model

by Mourad Ben Youssef,
Chief Librarian of Djerba Public Library, Tunisia

This initiative aims to give a second chance to illiterate women who left school early without reading skills, to be able to work through their education in the Digital Literacy Club.

The project targeted five SDGs:

  • Inclusive and equitable quality life-long learning
  • Good health and well-being
  • Gender equality
  • Decent work for all and economic development
  • Partnerships to achieve goals

The Club established partnerships with organizations that share the same goals. Participants were divided into two cohorts (each cohort 16 women). The first cohort started classes in late 2017, and the second cohort ran from July to November 2018.

We adopted actual formal school programs in schools, used sophisticated tools such as computers, scanners, and spreadsheets, focusing strongly on practice rather than theory.

As a result, evaluation at the end of the training sessions showed that 90.62% of the participants passed the training with good grades. The scores were between nine and 17 out of 20, which is a generally an acceptable/satisfactory result.
