MENA Libraries and the SDG: An insight into a challenging opportunity

Dr. Imad Bachir,
IFLA Chair of MENA Regional Division

IFLA’s advocacy of the goals of the United Nations 2030 agenda created a golden opportunity for libraries to interact widely with the social, educational, and economic issues worldwide.

It has been an occasion for libraries to introduce diverse development programs and play a different role globally, regionally and locally alongside other organizations in fighting poverty, promoting education, securing clean water, countering extremism, protecting public freedoms and spreading knowledge to all. Libraries are no longer only a place to read a book, and no longer confined to their shelves and walls. It is not enough anymore for libraries to only provide access to information, but also to contribute to solutions of humanitarian crises in communities.

The presentation provides insight into some projects that IFLA’s MENA Regional Development Committee is working on during its mandate for the coming two years. These projects derived from IFLA’s strategic advocacy to support and disseminate awareness about UN Sustainable Development Goals and the roles that libraries would perform and implement in this respect.
